Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded Review

Get Your Sleaze On

·

Time to get your sleaze on with the dirty and adult humorous point and click adventure game from Replay Games that also happens to be a HD remake, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded. The original Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was out in 1987 on the Apple II and many people have found nostalgic memories of the game. So it was only a matter of time before a full HD remake was to come about to bring it more into the 21st century of gaming.

Larry the Lech

If you are new to the Leisure Suit Larry games you need to know that it is advertised and supposed to be a “mature” game. This is in the sense that the humor throughout is more on the adult side with mention of many different sexual things that I won’t really go into further detail on. However, this goes right into play with the whole theme and the character you play…Larry. Larry is the definition of sleaziness and makes you aware of it. Throughout the narration you get a grasp of who he is and through his dialogue you hear just who gross and…well pitiful Larry really is.  But he is the character you are tasked with playing as and the ultimate goal is to help him get lucky if you think you’re up to the challenge (and trust me it will be). Gameplay is a typical point and click adventure style were you go from location to location (aka bars to casinos) and figure out the puzzles by finding items and using them correctly.

Nostalgic Giggles

For those of you who are old enough to remember the original Leisure Suit Larry, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded will be a good nostalgic trip although it may not seem as you remember. Back in 1987 you may have thought the dirty jokes were the funniest and edgiest part to be in a video game. However in today’s standards it seems pretty dated. The jokes to me are not funny in the least and I think that only if you’re currently 10 years old would you think that it is funny. This makes Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded’s thematic appeal really rely on nostalgia as the actual theme just doesn’t really hold up to today’s standards in my mind.

Hunt and Peck

At its core Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded is a point and click adventure so you are tasked with doing a relatively simple task (score a lady) but by doing an incredibly complicated series of events with weird items you find around the locations. This is an inherent part of this genre of games and they can be quite fun to play and provide interesting stories. But on the flip side if a game has a mismatch on difficulty or randomness then the game can become a pain to play. I feel that as a whole Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded  is of the latter. Some of the point and click puzzles were logical but I found that in general the puzzles were illogical and quite weird. This makes more of a hunt and peck brute force style of gameplay of you just clicking everything with all the actions.

Go Back in Time

I suppose the big question is if Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded is worth the play and worth the price. Price wise it is free…for the first part of it. The rest of the game is $4.99 which honestly may be a little too steep in my opinoin for the game. Of course if you were a fan of the original you’ll love the reloaded version; HD graphics, improved animations and full voice acting. But if you’re new to the series you may find things a little stale for current tastes…
